A few weeks ago, I was on a flight to Miami with Inge and Raffi. It’s a short trip and Raffi was having a good time entertaining himself with his toys, lollipops, and pre-downloaded YouTube shows on my phone. We were flying JetBlue, so I was happy to see they had screens available, which isn’t always the case on short flights. Since Raffi was entertained, I took the opportunity to browse for a bit before landing on a documentary called The Biggest Little Farm.
Oh boy. Can I just tell you how many times I looked over at Inge while watching this with tears in my eyes saying, “I love this movie.” Maybe it was the effect of being up in the air, but I was surprisingly so emotional about it. The film isn’t new or anything, it came out in 2019, but in case you haven’t see it, I’d love to tell you about it.
It starts out with the story of a young couple living in Los Angeles, Molly and John Chester. They adopt a rescue dog, Todd, who’d been unfortunately very traumatized from his previous family. Whenever they leave their apartment, Todd barks so much to the point that they eventually get evicted. Instead of finding another apartment, the couple makes the life changing decision to uproot their lives and buy a 200-acre farm in Ventura County.
Over the course of the next eight years, they document how they transformed an arid, soil depleted land into this gorgeous and lush organic farm that is now thriving. There are moments that are completely heartbreaking, as we watch them face challenges that would make anyone else give up and quit. But Molly and John are resilient and over time, they learn how to live in harmony with nature.
